Biography

Juan was born in 1689 in Nueva Galicia to Francisco Montes Vigil and María de Enciso y Jiménez.^[1] In 1695 his family joined the Zacatecas colonists and moved to New Mexico.^[2] In 1713 he married Ines López^[3] and they had three children: Manuel, Manuela, who died when she was eight years old, and Juan, who died when he was six years old. After Ines' death, Juan married Antonia Nicolasa Lujan in 1745^[4] and they had one daughter, María Manuela de la Luz.

In 1753 Juan was the alcalde mayor of Santo Domingo, Cochiti, and San Felipe Pueblos.^[5] He was quite wealthy by the time he died according to his will which he wrote in April 1762.^[6] He died about a month later.^[7]

Research Notes

1. In his son Manuel's marriage record, he is named Toribio Juan Vigil, the only record that shows this name.^[8]
2. In his will, Juan left some property to "auna niña que criado, llamada Bartola (a girl I raised named Bartola)."^[6] There is no explanation regarding who she is or why he raised her. It is noted elsewhere in the will that his other three heirs did not contest this gift.
3. The prenuptial investigation for his marriage to Inez López in New Mexico Roots, Ltd. is dated 1733, which is incorrect. See Montes Vigil and López - wrong marriage year for an explanation.
